Chapter 24

Nathan had just strapped Finegan into a baby carrier backpack he wore before beginning another day of posting more lost dog posters, while friends and even strangers were out doing the same. Together they had already left their mark, or Murphy’s mark, across two counties. They focused on the foothills and just beyond where Murphy went missing, in the more populated Lake Tahoe region.

As Nathan secured what seemed like the millionth paper with the identical picture of Murphy on the front of a tree, a man driving by noticed him. What really got his attention, and made him decide to pull over, was seeing a baby on Nathan’s back.

The man got out of his car and walked directly to Nathan and Finegan. He scanned the sign that was now attached to the tree, but didn’t have to read much beyond MISSING to know what to do next.

“I’d like to help,” the man called out, leaving his car parked on the side of the road. He was dressed in slacks and a long-sleeved dress shirt as though he were on his way to work.

Nathan was surprised and couldn’t help but grin, humbled by yet another stranger’s support. He was reminded that there are far more good people in the world, people who want to help others, than there are bad ones.

“Thank you,” Nathan said, reaching to shake the man’s hand. “I’ll bet you didn’t think you’d be posting signs when you woke up this morning.”

“If you can be out here doing that with your baby on your back, well, I’d like to help too,” the man clarified, beginning to roll up his sleeves.

Nathan smiled, handing him a stack of white posters before talking strategy. They decided that the man would post them on the route he was taking to the office, an area that as far as Nathan knew hadn’t yet been covered.

In the first three months of the search, concentrating on his job was difficult because Nathan spent all of his free time looking for Murphy. And when he was at work, he was still thinking about Murphy. He and Erin jumped every time the phone rang, ready to drive back up the mountain as they had so many times before.

Rings of exhaustion began to form under Nathan’s eyes as he hadn’t felt truly relaxed, nor had he gotten a restful night sleep, since the day they last saw Murphy. As much as his body wanted to shut off and not think about every possibility as well as the should-haves, would-haves, or could-haves, it was as though Nathan’s brain stood with a yardstick, rapping his body with it if he dared to take a break.

The Brauns dreamed to hear the words, “Murphy is doing fine and coming home…This was all just a terrible misunderstanding.” But as each day, each week, and then each month passed, the nightmare wouldn’t end.

Over the months those hope-filled words, “We may have found your dog,” were heard less and less, so Nathan’s pulse beat
